Angel of the Outback: Nancy Bird Walton, Australia's First Female Pilot

Nancy Bird Walton was Australia's #pioneering #femaleaviator and the youngest woman in the #British Empire to earn a commercial pilot's licence at just 19.
Her passion for flying sparked at age 13 during an unforgettable joyride in a #dehavilland Gipsy Moth piloted by Reg Annabel, a 1920s aviator. This thrill led her to take lessons from the legendary Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. She soon purchased her own Gipsy Moth and, with friend Peggy McKillop, embarked on barnstorming tours, offering joyrides at country fairs and chartering flights across New South Wales, introducing many to #aviation and #femalepilots for the first time.
She is best remembered for her groundbreaking humanitarian efforts in the 1930s with the Far West Children's Health Scheme (also known as the Royal Far West Children's Health Scheme). Hired by Reverend Stanley Drummond, she flew nurses, doctors, medical supplies, and baby health services to remote #outback communities, often navigating by road maps and landing in rough paddocks amid kangaroos and harsh terrain. This pioneering air ambulance work brought essential healthcare to isolated families lacking access to proper medical facilities, earning her the enduring nickname "Angel of the Outback".
